In the Absence of Our Default Night

by Adil al-Qassas

Translated from Arabic to English by Adil Babikir

O Night, the one that we used to

You are still my favourite embrace, though you keep receding

I need to impart my complaints to you—
Leave a little part of you, so we may shed tears- green ones, though

We no longer enjoy you as we once did

You used to lull our sobs into sleep
But we can no longer fall to slumber

Dreams have deprived us of inner light

O Night, the one that we used to
You are our grand pillow;
We are waiting for you.
